West Raddon emerges from the Devon landscape as a quiet collection of dwellings defined by the high, rolling contours of the Mid Devon countryside. It lies 3.8 miles east-north-east of Crediton (from Crediton: bearing 71°T, OS grid SS 890 022), and is situated east-north-east of Shobrooke village. To the north-north-west, the earth rises toward Raddon Hill, where the remnants of a Neolithic causewayed enclosure and later hillfort hold the memory of ancient inhabitants against the sweeping sky. The light here catches the damp stone of old farmsteads, casting long, pale shadows across the narrow lanes that wind between fields of heavy clay and pasture.
