About Arne

Salt-crusted winds sweep across the mudflats and saltmarshes that define the low-lying edge of Arne. It lies 3.1 miles east of Wareham (from Wareham: bearing 81°T, OS grid SY 972 881), and is situated east-north-east of Ridge village. The landscape here breathes with the vast, tidal pulse of Poole Harbour Sssi, where the water retreats to reveal a glistening, grey expanse of silt. Arne sits within the Purbeck Heaths, a terrain where gorse and heather press close against the darkening horizon. Traces of a more bellicose past remain near the summit of Arne Hill, where the concrete remains of a heavy anti-aircraft battery stand as silent, weathered sentinels against the sky. A short distance away, the Bronze Age earthwork of a bowl barrow rises from the heath, grounding the present in a deep, archaic stillness. Sunlight often catches the metallic sheen of the Ladybird Spider sculpture, a curious modern totem resting amidst the wild, scrubby growth. Arne remains a place of quiet transition, where the land eventually dissolves into the brine of the harbour.
