About Bourton

Bourton holds the low, damp light of the Stour valley within its heavy stone walls, catching the evening as it spills over the limestone ridges. It lies 2.5 miles west-south-west of Mere (from Mere: bearing 247°T, OS grid ST 775 307), and is situated south-south-west of Zeals village. Deep springs once powered the ironworks and flour mills that gave the place its industrial pulse, leaving behind a legacy of clear water and quiet, moss-covered sluices. A short walk toward the horizon reveals Factory Pond, where the water remains still enough to mirror the grey, shifting clouds of the West Country. Beyond the immediate gardens, the land climbs toward Hart Hill, where the air grows thinner and the wind carries the scent of turned earth and ancient, forgotten stone. The horizon is broken by the rugged, irregular hollows of the Pen Pits Quern Quarries, where generations of hands once laboured to cut the rock from the stubborn ground. Bourton remains a place of shadows and sudden clarity, where the modern world feels distant against the enduring weight of the surrounding hills.
