Charmouth rests where the Dorset coast begins its dramatic sweep towards the west. It lies 2.9 km east-north-east of Lyme Regis (from Lyme Regis: bearing 59°T, OS grid SY 365 936), and is situated south-south-west of Catherston Leweston village. The River Char, a modest ribbon of water, winds its way through the village before meeting the sea, its banks often fringed with the pale green of samphire. Charmouth’s shingle beach, a scatter of pebbles smoothed by the relentless tide, is a treasure trove for fossil hunters, the chalk cliffs above holding secrets of a prehistoric past. The air here carries the tang of salt and the distant cry of gulls, a constant reminder of its maritime embrace. Even the village green, a surprisingly generous expanse of grass, seems to hold a quiet, enduring stillness, a place for quiet contemplation between the ebb and flow of daily life.
