About Friar Waddon

Friar Waddon emerges from the chalky Dorset earth as a quiet collection of dwellings defined by the austere, rolling contours of the surrounding downland. It lies 3.2 miles north of Chickerell (from Chickerell: bearing 355°T, OS grid SY 640 857), and is situated north-north-west of Buckland Ripers village. The slopes of Friar Waddon Hill rise sharply just to the south, casting long, lean shadows that stretch across the pastures as the afternoon light begins to thin. Below these heights, the landscape retains a primitive stillness, marked by the presence of two bowl barrows that sit as silent, grass-covered sentinels near Friar Waddon House. These ancient mounds command a view over the limestone-rich ground, where the air often tastes of salt carried inland from the distant coast. To the south-west, the Corton Cutting Sssi preserves a rugged, unmanicured geology that resists the smoothing hand of modern agriculture. Friar Waddon remains a place where the horizon feels heavy with the accumulation of centuries, indifferent to the hurried pace of the world beyond its ridges.
