Stockwood emerges from the Dorset landscape as a quiet collection of dwellings where time seems to hold its breath. It lies 5.8 miles south-south-east of Yeovil (from Yeovil: bearing 160°T, OS grid ST 587 070), and is situated east-south-east of Melbury Osmond village. The terrain here falls within the Melbury Park Sssi, where ancient trees cast long, deliberate shadows over the limestone soil. To the south-east, the rise of Bubb Down Hill provides a natural boundary, catching the pale morning light before it reaches the valley floor. Stockwood maintains a modest presence, defined more by the slow turning of the seasons than by the clamour of modern industry. The lanes surrounding Stockwood are narrow and hemmed by thick, moss-covered hedges that seem to preserve the silence of the past. Farmers still work the heavy clay fields, their labour dictated by the temperamental cycles of rain and sun that define this corner of the South West.
