Turlin Moor occupies a low-lying peninsula that reaches out toward the tidal reaches of the Dorset coastline. It lies 2.2 miles west-north-west of Poole (from Poole: bearing 282°T, OS grid SY 981 917), and is situated south of Upton village. Salt-laden breezes drift inland from the water, carrying the sharp, clean scent of the harbour across the rooftops of Turlin Moor. To the north, the Lychett Bay Viewpoint offers a vantage over the shifting blues and greys of the estuary, where the light plays tricks on the surface of the mudflats. The landscape here is defined by its proximity to the water, where the earth feels soft and yielding under a vast, open sky. Nearby, the protected expanse of Ham Common Sssi guards a quiet wilderness of heathland, preserving a fragile mosaic of gorse and heather. This suburban edge maintains a watchful silence, keeping the rhythm of the tides rather than the haste of the nearby town.
