Burwash stretches along a high sandstone ridge, commanding a long view over the undulating folds of the Sussex Weald. It lies 5.4 miles south-south-east of Wadhurst (from Wadhurst: bearing 152°T, OS grid TQ 675 247), and is situated north-east of Burwash Weald village. The afternoon light here has a particular clarity, catching the weathered stone of the church tower and illuminating the copper-toned tiles typical of the local vernacular. Rudyard Kipling once walked these same lanes, finding in the quietude of the nearby seventeenth-century house, Bateman’s, a sanctuary that anchored his imagination.
