Chanac sits cradled by the rugged landscape of the Causse du Villard, where the air carries the sharp scent of box and thyme after a rain. The terrain is defined by the bare limestone of the uplands and the sheltering presence of the Forêt Domaniale de Mende nearby. Below these ridges, the Valat de Grueyze winds through the slopes, while the distant, mistral-scoured heights of la Cham de Blanquet dominate the horizon. Chanac se niche au creux des paysages arides du Causse du Villard, là où l'air se gorge du parfum du buis et du thym après l'ondée. Le relief est sculpté par le calcaire nu des plateaux et la présence protectrice de la Forêt Domaniale de Mende à proximité. En contrebas des crêtes, le Valat de Grueyze serpente entre les pentes, tandis que les hauteurs balayées par le mistral de la Cham de Blanquet dominent l'horizon. C'est une terre de pierre et de drailles anciennes, située aux portes de l'Aire d'Adhésion du Parc National des Cévennes.
