About Bagendon

Bagendon emerges from the quiet floor of a dry valley, defined by the ancient, grassy ramparts of the Bagendon Dykes that once marked a significant Iron Age tribal centre. It lies 3.2 miles north-north-west of Cirencester (from Cirencester: bearing 342°T, OS grid SP 006 069), and is situated south-west of North Cerney village. The limestone geology here dictates the pale, muted tone of the local stone, which seems to absorb the soft, slanting sunlight of the late afternoon. Traces of the past persist in the landscape, most notably where the earthworks of Scrubditch Dyke ripple across the nearby fields like a frozen wave of history. To the south-east, the slopes rising toward Peewits Hill provide a vantage point from which the entire valley appears as a singular, hushed basin. The architecture of Bagendon remains understated, with private dwellings reflecting the traditional craftsmanship of the Cotswolds without unnecessary flourish. Silence often holds sway here, interrupted only by the seasonal movement of wind through the high, exposed pastures. Such stillness allows the observer to perceive the subtle, enduring geometry of the land that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
