About Broadrock

Broadrock occupies a limestone shelf that tilts toward the River Wye, where the air holds the cool, damp weight of the river valley. It lies 7.0 miles west-north-west of Thornbury (from Thornbury: bearing 303°T, OS grid ST 543 964), and is situated north of Woodcroft village. The entire geography of Broadrock falls within the Lower Wye Gorge SSSI, a rugged limestone corridor where the geology dictates the slow, deliberate pace of growth. A short walk to the south-south-west brings one to the precipitous edge of Wintour's Leap, where the sheer drop invites a sudden, vertiginous awareness of the earth’s raw architecture. Sunlight here often hits the rock faces at sharp angles, turning the grey stone into a pale, flickering silver that seems to vibrate against the deep greens of the forest canopy. To the north-north-west, the Lancaut Promontory Fort guards the river bend, its ancient earthworks marking a boundary where the human history of the land abruptly meets the indifference of the cliffs. Broadrock remains a place of quiet transitions, where the wind from the gorge constantly stirs the canopy and reminds the observer of the persistent, unceasing movement of the river below.
