About Coldharbour

Coldharbour emerges from the quiet, wooded fringes of the Wye Valley, where the land holds the stillness of an old, forgotten boundary. It lies 4.6 miles south-south-west of Coleford (from Coleford: bearing 198°T, OS grid SO 552 037), and is situated south-west of St Briavels village. The landscape here is defined by the ancient, tangled canopy of The Hudnalls SSSI, which envelops Coldharbour in a verdant, protected silence. To the west, the earth rises in the remnants of Offa’s Dyke, a linear scar across the ridge that marks the ancient divide between kingdoms. Light filters through the dense timber with a heavy, golden quality, catching the moisture that clings to the limestone soil. Coldharbour maintains a watchful, solitary character, keeping its distance from the more travelled paths of the Forest of Dean. The nearby slopes of Cockshoot Hill offer a vantage point over the undulating terrain, where the air tastes of damp earth and coming rain. Through the seasons, the inhabitants observe a quiet existence, anchored by the shifting shadows of the trees and the persistent, slow work of the forest floor.
