Cowhill emerges from the flat, salt-misted expanse of the Severn Vale, a quiet collection of dwellings defined by the low, heavy sky of the South West. It lies 2.1 miles west-north-west of Thornbury (from Thornbury: bearing 294°T, OS grid ST 606 915), and is situated south-south-west of Oldbury-on-Severn village. The landscape here bows to the ancient tides, with the Cowhill Rhine carving a sluggish, silver vein through the heavy clay pastures to the west. Ancient earthworks ripple the horizon just to the north at Oldbury Camp, where the Iron Age ramparts still hold the silence of centuries against the relentless wind. A strange, pale light often clings to the fields near the Lower Farm Rhine, turning the reeds into ghostly sentinels during the damp winter months. Cowhill maintains a stubborn, agrarian character, its lanes bordered by hedgerows that have long outlived the men who first laid them. The proximity to the Severn estuary bestows a raw, maritime edge to the air, making the distant chimneys and castle towers feel like fragile markers in a vast, shifting territory.
