Edge End emerges from the ancient, calcified spine of the Forest of Dean, where the light falls in long, bruised streaks across the limestone outcrops. It lies 1.9 miles north-east of Coleford (from Coleford: bearing 36°T, OS grid SO 593 131), and is situated north-north-east of Mile End village. Beneath the canopy of the nearby Buckholt Inclosure, the ground holds the damp memory of forgotten iron mines, their hollows long since softened by moss and bracken. Edge End retains a quiet, industrial gravity, its houses built from the very stone that once dictated the hard lives of those who laboured in the deep earth. To the west, the hidden depression of Ninewells Bottom catches the morning mist, drawing the damp air toward the edges of the gardens and low-slung stone walls. The horizon here is defined by the persistent, dark silhouette of the woodland, which presses close against the domestic boundaries of the lanes. In the quiet hours, the wind carries the scent of pine and damp peat from the slopes, a reminder that the wild forest remains the true master of this high, rugged terrain.
