It lies 2.0 miles south-east of Minchinhampton (from Minchinhampton: bearing 140°T, OS grid ST 893 982), and is situated east-north-east of Avening village. The terrain here holds a persistent, cool stillness, where the thin soil over oolitic rock restricts the growth of trees but encourages the hardy, low-lying flora of the high pastures. A short walk to the west-north-west leads to the Norn’s Tump Long Barrow, where the earth rises in a silent, Neolithic hump against the wide, pale sky. To the east, the water of Cherington Pond reflects the shifting clouds, offering a glassy stillness that contrasts with the rhythmic, mechanical pulse of modern life in the surrounding districts. Nag's Head maintains a modest, peripheral presence, far removed from the clamour of larger thoroughfares. The light in this corner of the South West possesses a sharp, translucent quality, catching the sharp edges of dry-stone walls that divide the fields into precise, geometric shapes.
