Orange End emerges from the quiet creases of the Gloucestershire landscape as a small, secluded cluster of dwellings. It lies 3.4 miles south of Wotton-under-Edge (from Wotton-under-Edge: bearing 175°T, OS grid ST 761 878), and is situated south-south-west of Hillesley village. The earth here holds the damp, ancient weight of the Lower Woods SSSI, where the tree canopy keeps the air cool and thick with the scent of rotting leaves and damp timber. Rising sharply to the east, Cold Change Hill breaks the horizon, its slopes catching the pale, thin light of winter afternoons with a sudden, shivering brightness. Orange End remains tethered to this woodland fringe, a place where the stillness is only occasionally punctured by the sharp call of a crow or the rustle of deer in the undergrowth. A short distance to the southeast, the slopes of Hawkesbury Knoll rise to meet the sky, casting long, bruised shadows that stretch across the fields as the sun dips low. The local terrain demands a slow, deliberate pace, as if the land itself resists the hurried transit of the modern world. Orange End exists in a pocket of silence, defined by the heavy, loamy soil and the encroaching wildness of the surrounding timberland.
