About Ruspidge

Ruspidge holds its quiet place within the ancient embrace of the Forest of Dean. It lies 2.1 km south-south-west of Cinderford (from Cinderford: bearing 195°T, OS grid SO 651 120), and is situated north-north-west of Upper Soudley village. The air here, even on a still day, seems to carry the scent of damp earth and fallen leaves, a constant reminder of the woodland that presses in from all sides. Paths, worn smooth by generations of feet, wind through the scattered cottages, their stone walls often softened by a green velvet of moss. One can almost hear the echo of pickaxes in the rustle of leaves, a whisper of the mining past that shaped this corner of Gloucestershire. The light, when it breaks through the canopy, falls in long, slanting shafts, illuminating patches of bracken and the occasional hardy wildflower.
