Shiplate rises from the limestone fringe of the Mendip Hills as a quiet assembly of stone and pasture. It lies 3.7 miles south-east of Weston-super-Mare (from Weston-super-Mare: bearing 144°T, OS grid ST 355 563), and is situated east-south-east of Bleadon village. Sunlight here catches the pale, weathered rock, casting long shadows across the fields that define the horizon. To the east, the Shiplate Slait Sssi preserves a fragile, windswept ecology where rare grasses cling to the thin soil. Ancient burial rites are marked by the Two Bowl Barrows On Shiplate Slait, which stand as silent, earthen humps against the shifting clouds. The air carries a salt-tide sharpness, blown inland from the Bristol Channel to scour the hedgerows. Shiplate remains tethered to the slow turn of the seasons, where the primary labour is the grazing of livestock upon the rugged slopes. Winter evenings bring a profound stillness, leaving the hamlet to the owls and the cold, unblinking stars.
