Medstead occupies a high, chalky plateau in East Hampshire, where the horizon feels wide and open against the pale, shifting English sky. It lies 4.0 miles west-south-west of Alton (from Alton: bearing 251°T, OS grid SU 655 370), and is situated north of Soldridge village. Ancient earthworks remain as quiet reminders of earlier inhabitants, particularly at the Medstead Camp in the grounds of the manor house, where the grass grows thick over hidden ridges. The landscape here is defined by a slow, rhythmic elevation that lifts the earth toward the rounded summit of Dry Hill, offering long views across the surrounding fields. Beneath the soil, the porous chalk drinks the rain, leaving the surface dry and the air crisp, even when the clouds hang low over the neighbouring trees. A bowl barrow located west of Towngate Farm marks the land with an old, circular gravity, grounding the modern lanes in a much deeper, prehistoric stillness.
