About Hillway

Hillway emerges from the quiet eastern folds of the Isle of Wight, where the landscape softens into a patchwork of pasture and woodland. It lies 1.9 miles east of Brading (from Brading: bearing 99°T, OS grid SZ 636 866), and is situated south-south-west of Bembridge village. The horizon here is dominated by the chalky spine of Bembridge Down, a high, wind-swept ridge that casts a long, cooling shadow across the fields in the late afternoon. To the north, the salt-heavy air drifts inland from The Marshes, where the brackish water reflects the pale, shifting light of the English Channel. Hillway maintains a modest profile, defined by narrow lanes that skirt the edges of ancient hedgerows and hidden copses. The silhouette of the Bembridge Windmill rises not far to the north, its sturdy, circular form acting as a silent sentinel over the surrounding agricultural expanse. Residents of Hillway often look toward the elevated ground where the air turns crisp and the view stretches across the Solent toward the mainland. This environment possesses a singular stillness, a quietude that persists even when the seasonal coastal gales stir the canopy of the nearby woods.
