Rookley occupies a quiet, inland stretch of the Isle of Wight where the land begins to shed its coastal austerity for the softer, clay-rich folds of the central downs. It lies 3.3 miles south of Newport (from Newport: bearing 172°T, OS grid SZ 507 839), and is situated east-south-east of Chillerton village. The horizon here is defined by the gentle rise of Lode Hill and Elliot's Hill, which catch the low-slung, golden light of late afternoon and hold it against the darkening hedgerows. Below these elevations, the damp, sequestered expanse of The Wilderness SSSI provides a sanctuary for rare dragonflies and reeds that shiver in the prevailing south-westerly winds. Rookley maintains a character rooted in the rhythms of the surrounding chalk and greensand, far from the salt-spray of the island's famous cliffs. Residents traverse roads that trace the ancient contours of the landscape, moving between the dispersed clusters of houses that define the local geography. Autumnal mists often cling to the lower fields, blurring the boundary between the cultivated gardens and the wilder, unmanaged patches of scrub. This is a place where the stillness is punctuated only by the seasonal migration of birds and the faint, persistent murmur of the wind through the tall grasses.
