Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

The Metropolitan City of Bologna spans a landscape defined by the flat, misty plains of the Po Valley and the rising slopes of the Apennines. Here, the Fiume Reno flows through fields marked by irrigation ditches, while the silhouette of Monte della Capanna stands guard over the horizon. History has shaped this land from its roots as a Roman province into a vital centre of industry and culture. The region remains a place where the air hangs heavy with the scent of cured meats and the sharp, clean bite of mountain winds coming off the ridge toward Tuscany.
Bologna serves as the heart of this territory, home to the Archiginnasio of Bologna and the Basilica of San Petronio. In the wider countryside, the city of Imola anchors the east with the Enzo and Dino Ferrari International Racetrack and the Sforza Castle of Imola. Nearby, Casalecchio di Reno preserves the historic Chiusa di Casalecchio di Reno, maintaining a bridge between the urban sprawl and the protected natural areas like the Riserva Naturale Contrafforte Pliocenico. Life here moves with the steady rhythm of a city that values its architectural heritage.
Beyond the city walls, the land reveals the Parco Regionale dei Gessi Bolognesi e Calanchi della Abbadessa, where the earth breaks into chalky ridges. The light in the late afternoon catches the brickwork of the Church of San Domenico and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Peter, casting a warm, ochre glow over the streets. Whether exploring the Margherita Gardens or the quiet corners of the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore, the visitor encounters a society built on the strength of its past. This is a region defined by its resilience and its enduring commitment to the arts and mechanical craft.

Coordinates: 44.4419, 11.3405. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Metropolitan City of Bologna and to 911 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
