Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

The province of Modena stretches across the flat plains of Emilia-Romagna, where the air often holds the damp, heavy breath of the Po valley. Irrigation ditches divide the fields into precise grids, reflecting a landscape shaped by human hands and the slow movement of the Fiume Secchia and Fiume Panaro. To the south, the terrain rises toward the Apennine ridge, where the silhouette of Monte Cimone dominates the skyline. This region, once a Roman province and later a significant duchy, maintains a character defined by its agricultural roots and industrial precision. In the city of Modena, the Duomo di Modena stands alongside the Galleria Estense and the Museo Enzo Ferrari, while the Mercato Albinelli pulses with the daily rhythm of local life.
Life in the province finds its heartbeat in the arcaded brick cities and the quiet, structured order of its towns. In Carpi, the Palazzo dei Pio and the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta frame a history of textile production and civic governance. Further south, Sassuolo is defined by the Palazzo Ducale di Sassuolo and the nearby Castello di Montegibbio. The land is marked by natural phenomena like the Riserva Naturale Regionale delle Salse di Nirano, while the Parco Regionale dei Sassi di Roccamalatina offers a rugged escape from the lowland mist. Local identity is forged in the production of balsamic vinegar and parmesan, reflecting a commitment to craft that persists despite the pressures of modern industry.
History here is not a distant abstraction but a condition of the present. As a territory that served as a frontier for centuries, the province has weathered shifts in power, from the rule of the House of Este to the unification of Italy, which demanded heavy sacrifices from these communities. The resilience of the population remains evident in their deep connection to the land, whether near the waters of Il Lagone or along the slopes near Poggio Roggio. Whether exploring the Chiesa di San Francesco or the Museo Monumento al Deportato Politico e Razziale in Carpi, one encounters a region that balances the weight of its complex past with a grounded, industrious vitality.

Coordinates: 44.547, 10.9023. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Province of Modena and to 804 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
