SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Ravenna.
Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

The Province of Ravenna sits upon the flat plains of Emilia-Romagna, where the morning mist clings to the lines of poplar trees and irrigation ditches partition the heavy soil. Between the Fiume Lamone and the Canale Emiliano Romagnolo, the land yields to a quiet, agricultural rhythm. Beyond the fields, the landscape rises toward the Apennine ridge, reaching toward the Poggio di Monte Piano and Monte Ricci. The air here holds the damp chill of the Po valley, a stark contrast to the golden light reflecting off the mosaics in the Basilica of San Vitale and the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo. This is a region shaped by the drainage of marshes and the labor of those who turned the silt into fields.
History in this province is measured in the marble of the Neonian Baptistery and the Arian Baptistery. Ravenna served as a capital of the Western Roman Empire and later as a seat of the Exarchate, leaving the Archiepiscopal Chapel of St. Andrew and the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe as markers of its political weight. The city of Faenza expanded its influence through ceramics, housed today in the International Museum of Ceramics and the Carlo Zauli Museum, while Palazzo Milzetti reflects the Neoclassical period. Further inland, the Rocca Estense in Lugo and the Collegiate Church of Saint James the Greater watch over the town squares, while the Monument to Francesco Baracca serves as a reminder of the twentieth-century conflicts that scarred the region.
Life in the province moves from the urban centers to the surrounding protected areas, such as the Riserva Naturale Speciale di Alfonsine and the Piallassa della Baiona e Territori Limitrofi. While Ravenna remains the seat of government, towns like Bagnacavallo and Russi maintain their own distinct character. Economy and landscape are woven together, from the parmesan dairies to the prosciutto lofts that define the local production. Whether visiting the Church of San Francesco or the Pinacoteca Comunale di Faenza, one observes a region that retains a precise, grounded identity, far from the coastal tourist paths, focused on the steady cycles of the land and the preservation of its Byzantine and Renaissance heritage.

Coordinates: 44.3741, 11.9103. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Province of Ravenna and to 283 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
