SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Lombardia.
Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Lombardia stretches from the prealpine lakes under steep wooded shores down to the flat expanse of the plain. Here, the land is marked by rice fields and winter fog, with poplars standing in rigid ranks along the water. The region is a mosaic of twelve provinces, from the mountainous terrain of Sondrio to the industrial heartland of Milano and Monza e della Brianza. Across 1,502 comuni, the landscape shifts from the terraced slopes of the Valtellina to the fertile vines of Franciacorta. It is a territory shaped by ice in the valleys and defined by the sharp contrast between the stone and glass of the urban centers and the quiet rhythm of the rural districts.
The character of the region is rooted in its history as a vital duchy and a frontier often fought over by foreign powers. Milano stands as the primary economic engine, a city of over a million people where the past is preserved in the Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio and the Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore. The Arco della Pace and the Acquario Civico di Milano reflect the city's civic pride, while the Bosco Verticale points toward its contemporary ambition. Beyond the capital, the region balances its administrative responsibilities with a deep-seated tradition of craftsmanship and textile production, maintaining a momentum that remains steady through the changing seasons.
In Brescia, the history of the region is etched into the Capitolium and the Castello di Brescia, remnants of a complex past as a Roman city and a medieval stronghold. The city’s identity is further defined by the Chiesa dei Santi Nazaro e Celso and the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Carità. Nearby, Monza is known for the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, yet it retains a quieter side within the walls of the Arengario and the Cappella di Teodolinda. These urban centers serve as anchors, their daily life punctuated by the tolling of bells at the Chiesa di San Gerardo al Corpo and the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Strada.
Bergamo offers a different perspective, where the Accademia Carrara and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore stand as testaments to the region's artistic legacy. The silhouette of the Castello di San Vigilio overlooks the city, while the Battistero di Bergamo and the Cappella Colleoni anchor the historic center. Throughout the region, the influence of the duchies and the unification of Italy has left a lasting mark on the social fabric. From the busy streets of Busto Arsizio to the quiet corners of Cremona and Varese, the people of Lombardia continue to navigate the intersection of their storied heritage and the demands of a modern, interconnected economy.

Explore Lombardia, Italy, Italy, with a Google street and satellite map — switch between the two with the buttons on the map. Street View gives a ground-level view along the roads. Coordinates: 45.5891, 9.545. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to each of the 12 province of the region and to 6,945 place maps.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
