SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Oristano.
Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Oristano serves as the administrative centre of an autonomous region where the sun bleaches the granite and defines the edges of the macchia scrub. The landscape is shaped by the Fiume Tirso and the Riu de Mare Foghe, which carve paths through a terrain marked by the presence of Serra Porceddas and Serra Baccus. Within this province of eighty-seven comuni, life gravitates toward the Antiquarium Arborense and the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. The air carries the scent of cork oak, and the rhythm of the day is dictated by the slow movement of the land toward the interior.
Cabras acts as a vital point of interest, housing the Museo Civico Archeologico Giovanni Marongiu and the Stagno di Cabras. Near the Archaeological Area of Tharros, the earth reveals its history as a site of ancient settlement, distinct from the medieval role of Oristano as a seat of power. The region balances its agricultural roots with a focus on the preservation of its wetlands, such as the Pauli Maiori and the Stagno di Santa Giusta. Here, the landscape remains open, defined by the proximity of the Campu Longu valley and the distant waters of Lago di Ollastra.
Economic activity across these towns, including Terralba and Bosa, reflects a long-standing reliance on the land and the surrounding water. The province has navigated shifts in status, transitioning through periods of administration that left the Torre di Mariano II as a mark of the medieval era. The light over the province is sharp, highlighting the contrast between the summits like Genna Spina and the low-lying plains. It is a place where the distance between towns feels significant, and the history is found in the physical remnants of the past rather than in abstract narratives.

This hub links to every comune in the Province of Oristano and to 134 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
