SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Sassari.
Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

The Città metropolitana of Sassari defines the northern reaches of Sardegna, a landscape etched by granite ridges and the persistent scent of macchia scrub. Here, the horizon is anchored by the distant silhouette of Monte Limbara, while closer to the city, the slopes of Monte Piscamu and Monte Figos frame the sky. The land is drained by the Riu Mascari and the Riu Ottava, with the quiet waters of Bunnari Alta and Bunnari Bassa reflecting a light that feels ancient and still. Beyond the city centre, the terrain rolls toward the Valle Acchettas, a place where the air carries the dry heat of the interior, grounding the province in a geography of stone and scrub.
Sassari serves as the administrative heart, its character shaped by the Palazzo Giordano and the enduring presence of the Chiesa di San Pietro di Silki. The city’s history is a layered account of shifting powers, having transitioned through eras of maritime dominance to become a provincial capital. Nearby, Alghero retains the unique echo of Catalan speech, a legacy of its past as a strategic frontier. The Cattedrale di Santa Maria and the Torre di Porta Terra stand as silent witnesses to these centuries of trade and defense, while the Necropoli di Anghelu Ruju and Nuraghe Palmavera reveal a much older, pre-Roman foundation that still dictates the rhythm of the countryside.
Economic life in this region has long been tied to the land and the sea. Porto Torres remains a vital maritime gateway, anchored by the Basilica di San Gavino and the remnants of the Roman port at the Area Archeologica di Turris Libisonis. While the modern economy draws from diverse sectors, the traditions of the textile and agricultural sectors persist in the smaller towns like Ittiri and Ozieri. The vast protected waters of the Santuario per I Mammiferi Marini guard the northern coast, ensuring that the legacy of this territory remains as clear and unyielding as the water itself.
Mentre l'economia moderna attinge a settori diversi, le tradizioni agricole e tessili persistono in centri minori come Ittiri e Ozieri.

Coordinates: 40.6175, 8.7496. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Metropolitan City of Sassari and to 165 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
