SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Messina.
Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Messina, a metropolitan city in the autonomous region of Sicilia, serves as a gateway where the sea meets the rugged terrain. From the heights of Monte della Castagna and Serro Cento, the landscape descends toward the coast near Oliveri and Falcone. The province sustains itself through maritime trade and agriculture, reflecting a history shaped by its role as a Greek colony and later a strategic frontier in the Mediterranean. The air here carries a sharp, saline clarity, and the streets are organized around central landmarks like the Messina Cathedral and its bell tower, or the Church of the Annunciation of the Catalans. Life moves with the rhythm of the tides, marked by the presence of the Torrente Elicona and the distant, ever-present silhouette of Monte Etna.
In urban centers like Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto and Milazzo, the architecture reveals the weight of past eras, from the Duomo di San Sebastiano to the imposing Castello di Milazzo. These spaces are defined by the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi and the Church of Saint Mary of the Germans, which stand as anchors for the local community. Beyond the city walls, the land transitions into protected areas such as the Riserva Naturale Orientata Laghetti di Marinello. The economy relies on these historic ports and the surrounding valleys, where the soil yields its fruits under a sun that warms the stone of the Fontana di Orione and the walls of Forte Gonzaga.
Geography dictates the daily patterns of the people, whether near the shores of the Ponente Beach or within the quiet expanse of the Piano Colla. The region functions as a bridge, bearing the marks of its time as a kingdom and a maritime power. Connectivity is found in the paths leading toward the Passo del Cedro or the Portella Finocchiara, linking disparate communities through the mountains. While the modern era brought industrial shifts, the character remains grounded in the tangible reality of the land and the sea, where the Torrente Timeto marks the landscape and the Riserva Naturale Orientata Bosco di Malabotta preserves the wild interior.

Coordinates: 38.0597, 15.0366. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Metropolitan City of Messina and to 633 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
