Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

The Metropolitan City of Firenze, set in the heart of Toscana, is defined by the steady flow of the Fiume Arno and the rising slopes of Monte Uliveto. This land bears the weight of a Roman origin and the enduring legacy of a powerful duchy, where Renaissance stone remains the foundation of civic life. Beyond the urban centre, the landscape softens into the Piana di Castello, while the skyline is marked by the distant heights of Monte Falterona. The air here holds a particular clarity, often catching the golden light against the white marble of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore or the silent, austere facade of the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella.
Life in the wider province revolves around the interconnected rhythm of forty-one comuni, where the industrial precision of Sesto Fiorentino and the residential character of Scandicci balance the historic core. Landmarks like the Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte and the Battistero di San Giovanni serve as anchored witnesses to the passage of time. In the surrounding hills, nature is preserved within the Area Naturale Protetta di Interesse Locale Torrente Mensola, while the proximity of the Laghi di Focognano provides a quiet refuge from the bustling commerce of the region. The textile and manufacturing heritage, exemplified by the Richard-Ginori Museum of the Doccia Porcelain Manufactory, continues to shape the local economy.
History in this region is carved into the very architecture of places like the Castello dell'Acciaiolo and the Pieve di San Martino. From the strategic importance of the Passo della Catena to the spiritual quiet of the Basilica di Santa Croce, the province acts as a bridge between the ancient past and the modern day. Whether walking near the Giardino del Museo Stibbert or observing the silhouette of the Cimone della Bastia against the horizon, one senses the continuity of a place that has survived conflicts to remain a centre of production and art. The land, rich with the memory of the past, remains a living, working environment.

Coordinates: 43.7822, 11.2433. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Metropolitan City of Firenze and to 818 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
