Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

The Province of Terni occupies a rugged heart of Umbria, where the landscape is defined by the flow of the Fosso Grande and the quiet presence of the Torrente Arnata. The skyline is marked by the heights of Poggio Santa Maria in Canale and the distant profile of Monte Soratte. In the wider countryside, the earth is a palette of olive terraces and oak woods, where mist settles into the Tiber valley during the early morning hours. This is a land of clear, sharp light that reveals the geometry of the hills, far from the coastal heat, maintaining a cool, grounded air that feels distinct from the softer plains found elsewhere in the region.
Historically, this area functioned as a frontier, shaped by its role as a Roman province and later contested during the shifting boundaries of duchies and kingdoms. The city of Terni grew as an industrial centre, leaving a distinct mark on its urban fabric, evident in the CAOS - Siri Factory Arts Centre. Beyond the factories, the Basilica of Saint Valentine and the Anfiteatro Fausto remain as anchors of the city. In the nearby town of Orvieto, the Duomo and the Etruscan Necropolis of Crocifisso del Tufo speak to older, foundational eras, while Orvieto Underground reveals the hidden masonry of a city built into the volcanic rock.
Life here follows the rhythm of the seasons, from the harvest of wild boar in the woods to the movement of water at the Cascata delle Marmore or the tranquil surface of Lake Piediluco. The town of Narni, with its Cattedrale di San Giovenale and the Bridge of Augustus, maintains a quiet, medieval gravity. Whether visiting the Museum of the Works of the Duomo or walking through the Parco Fluviale del Tevere, the province presents a reality made of stone, water, and the persistent, unadorned work of the people who cultivate these slopes and maintain the narrow, quiet streets of the smaller villages.

Coordinates: 42.6524, 12.3549. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Province of Terni and to 352 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
