Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Venice sits along a coastal landscape where the air is often heavy with the salt of the Litorale del Lido. The Canal Salso winds through the urban fabric, while the verdant space of Parco San Giuliano provides a quiet retreat from the rhythm of the city. Beyond the immediate water, the landscape stretches towards the Palude Pagliaga, capturing a light that shifts constantly against the horizon. Nearby, areas like Mestre and the island of Lido define the broader geography, grounding the city in a complex terrain of marsh and stone.
The history of Venice evolved from its origins as a maritime republic, dominating trade routes across the Mediterranean. It transitioned through periods as a powerful comune and later a signoria, maintaining independence through its naval strength and intricate diplomacy. The city served as a critical port, connecting markets between east and west, and eventually became a significant industrial centre with a legacy of textile and steel production. Its development reflects a persistent focus on commerce and sovereignty that shaped its unique political structure for centuries.
Today, the economy of Venice remains tied to its heritage as a vital hub of transport and maritime activity within the Veneto region. Its role extends beyond tourism, serving as an administrative and logistical centre that manages the surrounding coastal environment. The city functions as a bridge between its historic identity and modern infrastructure, balancing the preservation of its traditional industries with the demands of a contemporary port city in a changing landscape.
Cultural life in Venice is defined by its architectural treasures and artistic institutions. The St Mark's Campanile rises above the city, offering a vertical counterpoint to the low-lying canals. Inside the Gallerie dell'Accademia, the history of Venetian painting is preserved, while the Peggy Guggenheim Collection showcases modern works along the Grand Canal. The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute remains a focal point for those walking the water's edge. Meanwhile, the Jewish Ghetto of Venice and the Teatro La Fenice continue to serve as active sites of community and performance, anchoring the city in its deep intellectual traditions.

Explore Venezia, Veneto, Italy, with an embedded Google street and satellite map — switch between the two with the buttons on the map. Coordinates: 45.472199, 12.239974. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. The 57 nearby places listed above are drawn from OpenStreetMap, the IGM toponym database and a curated list checked against Wikipedia. Alternate and historic names for this place are given in the table above.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
