Allhallows occupies a low, windswept stretch of the Hoo Peninsula where the heavy grey sky of the Thames Estuary seems to press down upon the horizon. It lies 4.3 miles south-south-east of Canvey Island (from Canvey Island: bearing 148°T, OS grid TQ 838 778), and is situated south-west of Allhallows-on-Sea village. The land here is defined by a flat, salt-bitten austerity, where the tides push against the mudflats with a rhythmic, sucking sound that carries across the cooling marshes. Only a short distance to the north, the brickwork of Slough Fort and Wing Batteries remains as a silent, crumbling sentry against the encroaching tide. Further south, the expansive, reed-fringed pools of Stoke Marshes offer a sanctuary for wading birds that wheel and cry in the sharp, saline air. Allhallows maintains a quiet, utilitarian permanence, shaped more by the moods of the river and the scouring wind than by the frantic pace of the modern world.
