It lies 4.9 miles south-south-east of Stanford-le-Hope (from Stanford-le-Hope: bearing 155°T, OS grid TQ 736 765), and is situated west-north-west of Cooling village. The light here has a sharp, maritime clarity, caught and reflected by the vast, open expanse of Cliffe Marshes that stretch northwards toward the rhythmic pulse of the tide. Beyond the village boundaries, the water of Allen's Pond holds the grey-blue sky in a stillness that contrasts with the restless gulls overhead. To the west, the ground rises toward the quiet prominence of The Pinnacle, offering a vantage point where the industrial silhouettes of the river seem to dissolve into the haze. Cliffe maintains a character defined by this transition between the heavy, ancient clay of the inland fields and the salt-bitten air of the wetlands.
