About Newenden

Newenden rests in a bend of the Rother, a river that has long shaped its fortunes. It lies 7.2 km south-west of Tenterden (from Tenterden: bearing 218°T, OS grid TQ 839 274), and is situated east-south-east of Linkhill village. The land here, a soft loam, has always been generous, yielding crops that seem to hold the very colour of the afternoon sun. For centuries, the boats that plied the Rother would have brought a murmur of distant places to its banks, a gentle tide of trade and rumour. Even now, a quietude pervades the air, broken only by the distant bleating of sheep or the rustle of leaves in the ancient trees that guard the churchyard. The very stones of the parish church, worn smooth by countless hands and the passage of seasons, seem to absorb the light, giving Newenden a soft, enduring glow.
