North Street captures the low, wide horizon of the Hoo Peninsula, where the sky seems to claim more of the world than the earth itself. It lies 4.9 miles north-north-east of Gillingham (from Gillingham: bearing 13°T, OS grid TQ 811 742), and is situated south-west of Stoke village. The landscape here feels thin and brittle, defined by the brackish, creeping fingers of Damhead Creek that reach inland to meet the heavy, salt-crusted soil. Fields of stubborn grain stretch toward the grey-blue distance, marked by the occasional clatter of machinery that punctuates the otherwise hollow stillness of the marshlands. Nearby, the inhabitants of the Fenn Bell Conservation Project provide a strange, exotic contrast to the muted, wind-battered hedgerows that border the narrow lanes. North Street carries the quiet, functional gravity of a place that has long served the agricultural demands of the Thames Estuary. The light here is often silver and sharp, catching the edges of corrugated barns and turning the muddy tracks into mirrors after a sudden, coastal downpour. There is a persistent, ancient industry in the way the land holds the water, a slow negotiation between the farmer’s plough and the encroaching brine.
