Pett Bottom breathes a quiet air, a place where the chalk downs of Kent gently fold into the landscape. It lies 5.9 km south of Canterbury (from Canterbury: bearing 170°T, OS grid TR 160 520), and is situated south-east of Lower Hardres village. The hamlet's houses, some of them old flint cottages, seem to have grown from the very earth, their roofs softened by moss and time. A small stream, no more than a ribbon of silver on a bright day, winds its way through the valley, its murmur a constant, calming presence. The surrounding fields, a patchwork of greens and golds depending on the season, invite a slow wander, the air carrying the scent of damp soil and wild grasses. Here, the sky feels vast, a pale blue canvas that shifts and changes with the passing clouds.
