Sarre commands a quiet prominence over the low-lying reaches of the Wantsum Channel where the sea once carved a deep passage between the mainland and the Isle of Thanet. It lies 5.4 miles east-south-east of Herne Bay (from Herne Bay: bearing 115°T, OS grid TR 257 649), and is situated south-south-west of St Nicholas at Wade village. The horizon here is dominated by an expansive, pale sky that reflects off the damp earth of the nearby Sarre Marshes, lending the landscape a brightness that seems to bleach the colour from the surrounding fields. Beneath the soil, the remnants of an Anglo-Saxon Cemetery, Parish Church Of St Giles And Associated Remains Immediately East Of Sarre Mill bear silent witness to a time when this crossing was a vital artery of trade and migration. The wind moves with an unimpeded intensity across the flat, reclaimed terrain, carrying the scent of salt and turning the blades of the local windmill that has long served as a landmark for travellers. Travellers passing through Sarre today find a stillness that belies its former significance as a bustling transit point for those crossing the now-vanished water. The Stourmouth Valley draws the eye southward, where the land sinks into a verdant depression that catches the evening light in long, golden slants. There is a singular austerity to the architecture here, where flint and brick seem to have been hardened by the persistent coastal air.
