Uplees occupies a thin, flat strip of Kentish land where the sky feels unusually wide and pressing against the horizon. It lies 2.2 miles north-north-west of Faversham (from Faversham: bearing 333°T, OS grid TQ 999 643), and is situated north-north-east of Luddenham village. Salt-laden winds scour the low-lying fields, carrying the sharp, metallic tang of the nearby mudflats across the quiet lanes. To the north, the expansive wetland of Uplees Marshes acts as a blurred threshold between the solid earth and the shifting tides of the estuary. The light here often turns a bruised, silvery grey, reflecting off the shallow, winding channels that drain into the Swale. Inland, the industrial ghosts of the Oare Gunpowder Works remind visitors that this lonely terrain once thrived on the volatile alchemy of saltpetre and sulphur. Today, the landscape is defined by the slow, deliberate movement of birds circling over the reed beds and the distant, rhythmic pulse of water pressing against the banks. Uplees remains a place where the geography is dictated by the water’s edge, holding its own against the gradual, patient reclamation of the sea.
