Upper Upnor rests upon the rising slopes above the tidal currents of the Medway, where the air tastes of salt and ancient river silt. It lies 1.4 miles north-east of Rochester (from Rochester: bearing 34°T, OS grid TQ 755 705), and is situated south-west of Lower Upnor village. The incline of the land dictates the character of the streets, forcing houses to lean into the light that reflects off the water of Upnor Reach. Below the domestic gardens, the brackish expanse of Hog Marsh stretches toward the riverbank, its reeds swaying in a perpetual, hushed conversation with the tide. A short walk toward the water reveals Upnor Castle, a fortress of weathered stone that has long watched the passage of ships through the narrow channel. The architecture of Upper Upnor retains a functional simplicity, reflecting its long association with the naval history of the river.
