Well Hill occupies a high, chalky ridge that commands long views over the shifting greens of the Kentish landscape. It lies 3.2 miles south-south-west of Swanley (from Swanley: bearing 200°T, OS grid TQ 496 638), and is situated east of Maypole village. The eponymous Well Hill rises just half a mile to the south, its slopes catching a thin, pale light that seems to clarify the edges of every hawthorn hedge. Below these slopes, the ancient woodland of Lullingstone Park Sssi stretches out, a dense expanse where the air holds a cool, damp stillness even at high noon. The local ground is thin and flinty, forcing the trees to grip the earth with a stubborn, gnarled persistence. Silence often pools in the lanes surrounding Well Hill, broken only by the sharp, metallic call of a jay or the wind brushing against the dry grasses. Beyond the immediate rise, the wider horizon carries the quiet weight of the chalk downs, where the sky appears wider and more fragile than it does in the heavy, low-lying valleys.
