It lies 1.4 miles west-north-west of Brierfield (from Brierfield: bearing 291°T, OS grid SD 826 372), and is situated south-west of Wheatley Lane village. The morning light here often catches the grey slate roofs with a cold, metallic clarity, reflecting the austerity of the surrounding hills. To the south-south-west, the quiet descent of Moor Isles Clough carves a narrow, verdant incision into the terrain, offering a brief respite from the exposed ridges that dominate the horizon. Fence maintains a quiet composure, its historical character defined by the sturdy, unpretentious masonry that has weathered centuries of northern gales. Beyond the immediate cluster of buildings, the land rises toward the brooding presence of Chamber Hill, where the wind carries the scent of damp heather and distant industrial echoes.
