About Goodshaw Fold

Goodshaw Fold retains the stark, grey-stoned character of the Rossendale uplands, where the industrial legacy of the North West still clings to the hillsides. It lies 2.4 miles north of Rawtenstall (from Rawtenstall: bearing 355°T, OS grid SD 807 266), and is situated south-west of Dunnockshaw village. Stone cottages huddle against the rising terrain, their mortar darkened by the persistent damp that drifts in from the Irish Sea. To the west, the slopes of Goodshaw Hill rise abruptly, casting long, bruised shadows across the rooftops during the shortening afternoons of winter. Below, the water of the Folly Clough Brook carves a persistent path through the rock, its low, rhythmic murmur a constant accompaniment to the wind. Goodshaw Fold wears the remnants of its textile past in the sturdy masonry of its former weavers’ homes, now quiet against the backdrop of the rugged moorland. The light here often turns a bruised plum colour, illuminating the gritstone walls with a clarity that renders every lichen-spotted surface distinct. High above, the remnants of history linger on the heights, where the landscape remains scarred by the quiet, heavy memory of wartime decoys.
