About Sand Side

Sand Side marks a quiet transition where the solid earth of Lancashire begins to surrender to the encroaching tides of the Irish Sea. It lies 4.7 miles north-west of Garstang (from Garstang: bearing 315°T, OS grid SD 438 508), and is situated west-south-west of Cockerham village. Low-lying fields stretch toward the horizon, defined by a salinity that turns the summer grass into a pale, bruised silver. A short distance to the north-west, the salt-crusted expanse of Cockerham Marsh breathes with the rhythm of the rising water, pulling a cold, clean air inland. The landscape here feels unfinished, as if the land and the sky are still negotiating their borders amidst the reeds. To the west, the narrow, dark ribbon of Wrampool Brook cuts through the silt, draining the fields with a persistent, quiet industry. Sand Side remains a place of edges and thresholds, where the heavy, inland damp of the mosses finally meets the vast, indifferent light of the coast.
