Carr emerges from the rugged, upland terrain of the Pennine fringe, where the light catches the gritstone walls with a pale, silver intensity. It lies 3.9 miles north-east of Lees (from Lees: bearing 52°T, OS grid SE 003 084), and is situated north-north-east of Diggle village. The landscape surrounding Carr bears the quiet imprint of ancient industry, marked by the persistent, dark currents of Diggle Brook as it carves a path through the valley floor. To the east, the slopes of Thorns Clough rise abruptly, trapping the morning mist against the heather until the sun burns it clean away.
