About Tunstead

Tunstead rests in the folds of the Pennine foothills, a quiet scattering of homes and lanes. It lies 4.1 km east-north-east of Mossley (from Mossley: bearing 58°T, OS grid SE 004 045), and is situated south-south-east of Uppermill village. The land here, often softened by a pearly grey light, slopes gently towards the waters of the River Medlock, its course a silver thread through the greening fields. Evidence of its past as a place of industry can still be glimpsed in the sturdy stone of older buildings, remnants of a time when the hum of mills was a familiar sound. Though the great engines have long fallen silent, a certain resilience, a quiet pride, seems to linger in the air of Tunstead, like the scent of damp earth after a spring shower.
