About St Olaves

St Olaves rests in the quiet heart of Norfolk, a place where the gentle ebb and flow of the Waveney river has shaped its character for centuries. It lies 8.2 km west-south-west of Gorleston-on-Sea (from Gorleston-on-Sea: bearing 242°T, OS grid TM 460 993), and is situated south-west of Fritton village. The air here often carries the scent of marshland and distant fields, a subtle perfume that clings to the low-slung buildings and the ancient yew trees guarding the churchyard. Once a thriving river port, traces of its maritime past can still be felt in the way the village seems to lean towards the water, its old warehouses now repurposed and dreaming of cargo. The light, when it breaks through the often-clouded Norfolk sky, has a pearly quality, illuminating the reeds along the riverbank and the weathered brickwork of the parish church.
