It lies 3.4 miles east-south-east of Loftus (from Loftus: bearing 119°T, OS grid NZ 770 155), and is situated west-south-west of Hinderwell village. This small collection of dwellings claims its place within the protected expanse of the North York Moors National Park, sharing the earth with ancient, invisible ghosts of the past. To the north-northeast, the land rises to meet Black Hill, a feature that catches the first light of dawn and turns the heather to a bruised, melancholic purple. Nearby, the water of Birch Dale carves a persistent path through the stone, providing a rhythmic, low-frequency hum that defines the local silence. The surrounding terrain is marked by the remnants of a late prehistoric enclosed settlement, evidence of those who long ago found shelter in these high, wind-swept reaches.
