About Broxa

Broxa rests upon the high, thin ridges of the North York Moors, where the wind carries the sharp, cold promise of the distant sea. It lies 6.2 miles west-north-west of Scarborough (from Scarborough: bearing 289°T, OS grid SE 945 915), and is situated west-north-west of Hackness village. The land here rises and falls in long, rhythmic swells, shaped more by the relentless passage of weather than by the hands of men. To the west, the slopes of Howden Hill gather the morning mist, holding it fast against the sun until the day is well advanced. Beyond the immediate fields, the deep, quiet incision of Hard Dale cuts into the limestone, offering a sheltered sanctuary for the local flora that defies the exposed nature of the plateau. Ancient earthworks, such as the round barrow near Highdales, mark the high ground as a place where generations have long looked out over the same vast, shifting horizon. Broxa remains a place of sparse, hard-won beauty, where the horizon feels closer and more imposing than in the softer, low-lying shires. Life here keeps pace with the changing light, which turns the stubble fields to pale gold before the long shadows of the moors reclaim the earth.
