Cold Cotes emerges from the limestone-flecked contours of North Yorkshire as a quiet collection of dwellings defined by the austere beauty of the high Pennine fringes. It lies 3.3 miles east-north-east of High Bentham (from High Bentham: bearing 68°T, OS grid SD 716 712), and is situated north-west of Newby village. The horizon here is dominated by the gentle swell of Cock Flower Hill, which catches the slanted morning light and casts long, cooling shadows over the surrounding pastures. Through the lower fields, the waters of Cold Cotes Beck carve a persistent, glassy path toward the west, their movement providing a rhythmic pulse to an otherwise still landscape. Ancient stone walls divide the earth into a mosaic of grey and green, marking boundaries that have persisted through generations of agricultural toil. Beyond the immediate fields, the earth rises toward the remnants of Yarlsber Camp, a silent witness to the long human history etched into these rugged elevations.
