About Elslack

Elslack, a hamlet in North Yorkshire, lies quietly amidst rolling countryside. It lies 3.4 km north-north-east of Earby (from Earby: bearing 31°T, OS grid SD 926 496), and is situated south-west of Broughton village. The stone cottages of Elslack, their roofs often softened by moss, seem to grow organically from the land, and the air here carries the clean scent of damp earth after a spring shower. A small stream, perhaps no more than a playful trickle for much of the year, threads its way through the immediate vicinity, its murmurs a constant, gentle accompaniment to the rustle of hedgerows. The surrounding fields, a patchwork of greens and golds depending on the season, are often grazed by sheep, their woolly forms dotting the slopes like scattered clouds. The light here, particularly in the late afternoon, can cast a warm, honeyed glow over the ancient drystone walls that define the ancient boundaries of farmland.
